It has always been the case that the best way to install these is to determine roughly where the mirror positioning should be before attaching to the van and then tightening the 10mm nut at the rotating ball socket before actually attaching it. Occasionally we add some leftover bike inner tube or a rubber washer to help these mirrors from flopping in the wind. The mirror glass is oriented vertically when mounted to the Vanagon, as pictured.
